These Endless Days

You left them in the usual places
Obvious clues, visible traces
Clear, sharp, without confusion

Gone, the darkened black intrusion

Singing in my ear, the birds
Of paradise, their silky words
Soothing, sweet, softened tones
Fill my heart, my lungs, my bones

Where riddles thrive against the tide
Spinning webs of pain and pride
To serve the ever-vigilant eye
Undisturbed, at rest, alive

Lead the way through weeds and flowers
Away from devils in their towers
Who send their villains to and fro
Tripping up the status quo

Laughing, crying, lost in tears
We wander blindly through the years
To find we haven’t come too far
Despite the reasoning mind, alarmed

We move into the darkening day
Stars aligned to light the way
Returning borrowed thoughts, all true
For now, until tomorrow’s through

Wait for me next time, I pray
I’ll meet you at the door, please stay
A little longer than before
I know I know you at my core

You’re beautiful, you’re whole and true
Beloved, stay, I’m bound to you
Just one more chance to love, to laugh
To walk with you along the path

Arm in arm, my tender heart

Beating, loving, torn apart

Alive inside this mortal maze
Counting down these endless days
